Wine tip for the average Joe #003

Preventing tongue burn out:

In a response to my post about tongue burn out, the

"This is really good advice... do you have any tips on, um... tongue resting/giving your taste buds a break when you know you're going to be tasting a lot of wines?"

I hadn't realized that in my warning about tongue burn out and the effects it might have on your judgement of wine, I hadn't said anything about how to prevent it from occuring.

The answer to this is actually pretty simple and cheap. Between tasting different wines, eat some plain, unflavored crackers or bread. Also keep a glass of water near by, both of these will aid in cleansing your palate. Also, if you are going to be tasting a large number of different bottles of wine, you might consider smaller samples of each. Especially when sampling wines at your's or a friend's home where the wines you enjoyed would be available for you to drink more after the tasting is over.

On our 5 stop wine tour I don't recall being offered crackers at any of the wineries and that might have had something to do with the fact that they have so many tour groups go through daily, but I wish I had brought some crackers along with me to help prevent the burn out. I'm sure I won't let the same thing happen again.

Thanks! I had some really good cracker meant for palate cleansing at a friend's house a few years ago... I wish I could remember who made them. We weren't tasting, we just liked the crackers, so I can't comment on their effectiveness.

I still don't understand why I can't use my real name and real website when posting a comment.

If I knew how to spell Aaarrgh, I would insert that here.

Sorry, Dan I have changed the setting to allow anyone to comment, but it resets itself. I must be doing something wrong. I have been considering migrating to wordpress for the last week or so.
